Celine Song's highly-anticipated Past Lives follow-up hits theaters in June

Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans wind up in a love triangle fraught with deep feelings and deep class anxieties in the new trailer for Materialists. The highly-anticipated film was written and directed by Celine Song, whose celebrated breakthrough debut, Past Lives, similarly plumbed the depths of a complicated love triangle.

Materialists is centered around Lucy, a New York City matchmaker played by Johnson, who winds up weighing two prospective matches: Randy, the extremely handsome and wealthy man played by Pascal, and John, the extremely handsome and not-so-wealthy ex-boyfriend played by Evans.

The trailer — which features a new song from Japanese Breakfast — finds Lucy struggling to navigate this predicament, which also causes her to doubt her own abilities as a matchmaker. Randy, as Lucy puts it, is the ultimate

“unicorn, an impossible fantasy,” but in the clip, it is John who gets the most hopelessly romantic lines (even as he still deals with roommate issues): “When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you. So where does that leave us?”

Scattered in the beginning and end of the clip, too, are some of Lucy’s matchmaking clients, who provide comic relief with their romantic demands: “I deserve someone who fulfills all of my criteria”; “Nothing over 20 BMI”; “I don’t want someone who likes cats”; and the guy who responds to the prospect of a 31-year-old match, “I wasn’t really thinking thirties.”

Along with Johnson, Pascal, and Evans, the Materialists cast will also feature Zoë Winters, Dasha Nekrasova, Marin Ireland, and Louisa Jacobson. The film is set to arrive in theaters on June 13.
