Why Lady Gaga Almost Gave Up Music Career
Lady Gaga certainly doesn’t have a bad romance.
In fact, the A Star is Born actress explained that her fiancé Michael Polansky, who proposed on April Fool’s Day 2024, popped the question in an extremely sentimental way.
“He said to me, ‘If I ever proposed to you, how do I do that?’” Gaga told E! News in an exclusive interview. “And I said, ‘Just get a blade of grass from the backyard and wrap it around my finger.’ And he did. He did that when he proposed.”
As the 38-year-old (real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) spoke, she removed the ring from her left hand, held it up and added, “It's the blade of grass. It's the green ring that I wear.”
Her unique engagement inspired the “Paparazzi” singer musically and became the basis for her song “Blade of Grass,” which she cowrote with Michael for her new album Mayhem.
“I started to think about everything I've been through up until that moment,” she continued in the interview, airing March 10 at 11 p.m. “So, the song is actually kind of haunting. I'll never forget when we were writing the bridge, I said, ‘I'll give you something, but it's no diamond ring.’ And he said, ‘The air that I'm breathing.’”
As Gaga—whose mom Cynthia Germanotta introduced her to Michael in 2019—reflected on the songwriting experience with her fiancé, she gushed, “It was cool. He's my partner. It's a totally different experience when you're writing with your partner.”

And while the Oscar winner was eager to release her and Michael’s love song to the world, she’s even more excited to share it with their future children.
“That song gets to last forever and hopefully one day our kids will hear it,” she shared, adding she’ll enjoy telling them, “‘It's so special. That's about your dad.’”

Despite keeping a low profile since the start of their relationship, Gaga has let her love for Michael, an entrepreneur and former CEO of the San Francisco-based Parker Group, shine through over the years, sharing a photo of the two in March 2020 with the caption, "I've got a STUPID love."
The Oscar winner also called Michael "the love of my life" during an April 2020 interview with MSNBC's Morning Joe.
And in March 2021, he surprised her with a massive flower arrangement for her 35th birthday, prompting Gaga to share on Instagram, "I love you honey. I can't wait to be home with you and our dogs, that's all I need."

Also in 2021, following the February attack on her French bulldogs and dog walker Ryan Fischer, the "Born This Way" singer made a rare comment about her and Michael's life together, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "My dogs and the man that I love are my whole life."
