The best Nintendo Switch games of all time

Kirby, Mario, and Link all headline some of the best Nintendo Switch games ever Nintendo

It’s been eight long years since the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. The gaming landscape — not to mention the world itself — is a very different place. Released mid-generation while its competitors like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were midway through their cycle, it initially felt like a footnote. Why was Nintendo releasing a handheld device in the high-definition era where there’s a smartphone in everyone’s pocket? Didn’t its particular brand of family-friendly gaming seem like a thing of the past?

And it could’ve flopped, spelling the end of Nintendo. After the disastrous launch of its predecessor, the Wii U — a device whose intention was as muddied as its name — many were critical about the prospect of a new Nintendo console. Even if it sold well, how did the company that once led the pack as a trailblazer fit into the then-ecosystem? Even after the mountain of money they made with the original Wii, it seemed like their best days were behind them.

It all feels quaint now, looking back. Over the course of one of the longest console generations ever and record-breaking sales, it was almost foolish to think that it couldn’t be done.

But it surely wasn’t easy. The best Nintendo games aren’t beloved because they follow a trend of how they could be made, but rather how they should be. The Nintendo seal of approval (which used to be a literal seal) means that the experience players are looking for will be top tier. And although many of the biggest third-party franchises like Call of Duty or Madden may have moved on from Nintendo hardware because of technical limitations, the hybrid console quickly found its footing with a slew of handheld ports of existing hits, a deep well of now-iconic indies, and of course, its premier first-party titles.

And while its successor, the smartly named Switch 2, waits in the wings for its upcoming release, it very likely that many people who own a Switch will continue to play it well after the next big thing arrives.

With that, Rolling Stone is ranking the best games for the Nintendo Switch. And while there’s an embarrassment of riches to choose from, we’ve opted to stick solely to games that were exclusively available on the Nintendo Switch, meaning no cross-platform releases like Fortnite or indie games that also found their footing on PC. There’s also (almost) no re-release, remakes, or remasters because, while everyone loves an older game, the true test of a console’s clout is what new things it brings to the table.
