Reba McEntire and Rex Linn Confirm Engagement at Emmys 2025

Reba McEntire and Rex Linn have hearts of fighters.

But the Happy’s Place stars, who announced their engagement in September, are far from just surviving their era as fiancés and recently teased what is in store for their upcoming nuptials.

"It’ll be a lot of fun,” Reba, 70, gushed to E! News’ Will Marfuggi in an exclusive interview. “It’s gonna be a nontraditional wedding because that’s Rex and me. We like comfort, we love friends, we love food.”

Meanwhile, Rex admitted that the couple aren’t pushing themselves to hammer out every little detail, especially considering Happy’s Place—which they star in alongside Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Tokola Black Elk and more—is about to return for season two Nov. 7.

What we’re doing right now honestly is enjoying our engagement time,” Rex explained to E! News. “We haven’t set a date, we’re just going to enjoy our engagement and enjoy going to Happy’s Place every day.”

Indeed, while the duo—who started dating in 2020 after reuniting on the set of Young Sheldon decades after meeting—spends their work and personal life together, Rex emphasized that they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We love being around one another,” the 68-year-old continued. “We like going to work, we like coming home from work. We can’t wait to go back the next day. Our relationship in real life has enhanced our scenes where we’re together because we’re a lot more comfortable. It makes it a lot better for us.”

Meanwhile, the Happy’s Place cast is just as doting on Reba and Rex’s romance, with Belissa happily recalling the moment the couple broke the news of their engagement last December.

“They sent the sweetest video,” Reba’s onscreen sister effused to E!. “It was like the best gift ever. I was just so happy. The group chat was popping off—hearts, hearts, hearts. It was so exciting to find out.”

And of course, the couple’s happy news only adds to how exciting the latest season of the NBC sitcom is sure to be.

“Season two we’re just growing up a little bit,” Rex shared. “They’ve found our voices and we’re exploring each character’s personal life a bit.”

As he put it, “It’s getting fun.”

Season two of Happy’s Place premieres Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. For a deeper look into Rex and Reba’s romance, keep reading…

1991

Reba McEntire first met her special somebody Rex Linn on the set of Kenny Rogers' 1991 movie The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw, in which she played lead Burgundy Jones and he made a cameo.

"He gets a big kick out of it," the country music star recalled on Today in April 2023. "He says his part was riding into a saloon on a 4-year-old colt and going, 'Yeehaw!' and riding out."

Over the years, the two stayed in contact as friends. However, Reba was already married to Narvel Blackstock—becoming stepmom to his kids Shawna, Chassidy and Brandon Blackstock after tying the knot in 1989 and welcoming son Shelby Blackstock the following year—and it would be decades before she and Rex struck up a romance.

Four years after Reba and Narvel divorced near the end of 2015, she crossed paths with Rex again. This time, it was on Young Sheldon, where she made a guest appearance and he had a recurring role.

"Rex texted me and said, 'You going to be in town?'" Reba recalled on The Jennifer Hudson Show in July 2025. "I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Well, let's go to dinner.'"

After enjoying a meal with friends, the actress continued, they headed to a wine bar, where Reba ordered some tater tots and Rex determined, "That's your nickname from here on out."

Luckily for fans of the Tots (she's "Tater Tot" and he's "Sugar Tot"), there's a photo from that special night.

"Had a fantastic dinner with this Oklahoma girl," Rex wrote on Instagram in January 2020. "Tater Tots and Ketchup included."

January 2020 - June 2020

With their romance beginning at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Reba and Rex were forced to date long-distance. However, this enabled them to connect on a deeper level.

"Because of the pandemic, we didn't get to see each other from January to June 16, but we created an intimacy by texting and talking over the telephone that we wouldn't have gotten if we had been together all that time," the singer explained to E! News in April 2024. "So it was very special, and it was a great

way of finding out about each other without ever touching. We've been pretty much inseparable since June 16 of 2020. It was a wonderful way to get to know each other better."

October 2020

Reba and Rex went public with their relationship that fall.

"It's good to have a person to talk to, laugh with, get into subjects about what's going on, discussions about our past, our family, funny stories, him being an actor, me being an actress," the Grammy winner said while confirming their romance on an October 2020 episode of her podcast Living & Learning. "He's very into my music. I'm very into his career. It's just great getting to talk to somebody who I find very interesting, very funny, very smart and is interested in me, too."

That same month, Reba and Rex gave fans glimpses into their life together, posting photos of them from their time in Montana.

Fans got more insight into Reba and Rex's romance when he was a guest on her podcast the following year.

During their discussion, they looked back at how they've leaned on each other during tough times, which include the March 2020 death of Reba's mother Jacqueline McEntire after her battle with cancer.

"It was later on that I was texting you, and I told you about mamma—that we just found out that she had bladder cancer," the musician said on the October 2021 episode of Living & Learning. "And you said, 'Hey, you just feel free to call me anytime you need to talk.' And I just quit texting and then we've been talking ever since."

Rex also remembered how Reba called him and offered her condolences after his mother died in 1998.

"We talked for about 25 minutes, and I never forgot it," he added. "It was amazing, it was uplifting, it was really special and little did I know 20 years later, 21 years later I'd be doing the same thing with her on the phone."

August 2022

In August 2022, it was announced that Reba and Rex were taking their love to the small screen by playing married couple Sunny and Buck Barnes on Big Sky.

"We love working together because when we're at home, we get to practice, rehearse and he's a rehearsal schedule freak," Reba told ABC Audio in 2022. "He makes sure I know my lines before I ever go on stage."

And their castmates agreed they seemed pretty happy working on Happy's Place, which premiered in 2024.

"It's adorable and oftentimes ... we're taking a five-minute break or we're having breakfast or lunch and you look over and we have a bar set—it takes place at Happy's Place—and you look over and they're in a booth at the bar," Melissa Peterman, who also starred on Reba, told People in October 2024. "And it looks like they're legitimately on a date at a restaurant just sitting together being so adorably cute."

In fact, Reba noted she could see them being happy long term as husband and wife.

"Totally, if that's what Rex wants," the "What If" artist, who was married to Charlie Battles before her union with Narvel, told E! in April 2024. "I've been married twice. After the second one dissolved, I don't have much faith in being bound by a piece of paper or a ring. But I'm truly committed to Rex. So if that's something he feels totally strong about, that's fine with me. He's never been married before. So if he wants to experience that, I'm OK with that."
