Oscars 2025: Shocking Wins, Viral Performances & More Must See Moments

It's a real Cinderella story for Anora.

The movie—about a sex worker marrying a Russian oligarch—was named Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars on March 2, coming out on top against fellow nominees The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, The Substance, Nickel Boys and Wicked. (See all the winners from the 2025 Oscars here.)

Accepting the award at the ceremony—hosted by Conan O'Brien in Los Angeles—were producers Alex Coco and Samantha Quan, as well as Sean Baker, who wrote, directed and produced the film starring Mikey Madison.

Baker also won the trophies for Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing at the 2025 Oscars, tying the 1954 record held by Walt Disney for a person earning four Oscars in a single night. They are the only two filmmakers to have achieved the honor in the 97-year history of the Academy Awards.

However, Baker, 54, went a step further and broke a major record by becoming the only person to have ever won four awards on the same night for the same film. (Disney's milestone over 70 years ago was for four different movies: The Living Desert, The Alaskan Eskimo, Bear Country and Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom.)

"We made this movie for $6 million shooting on location in New York City with about 40 crew members," Coco shared in their Best Picture speech. "They're all back in New York. This is for you guys. Thank you so much. We made this movie independently. If you're trying to make independent films, please keep doing it. We need more. This is proof."

As for Quan, she barely felt like "this can be real life."

"To our small but mighty crew and our ridiculously talented cast, led by the amazing Mikey Madison," she said onstage. "We made this with very little money, but with all of our hearts. To all of the dreamers and the young filmmakers out there, tell the stories you want to tell. Tell the stories that move you. I promise you, you will never regret it."

Baker added, "And one last thing, I want to thank the Academy for recognizing a truly independent film. This film was made on the blood, sweat and tears of incredible indie artists."

In addition to Best Picture, Anora was also nominated in six other categories, with Madison winning Actress in a Leading Role.

Heading into the evening, Emilia Pérez had the most nominations of any movie with 13 in total, followed by The Brutalist and Wicked with 10 each. However, Emilia Pérez's road to the Oscars was marred by controversy after Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón received backlash over past offensive tweets targeting Muslims and other groups.

"I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt," Gascón said in a statement from Netflix. "As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."

In response to the scandal, director Jacques Audiard—who received an Academy Award nomination for Directing—told Deadline, "Very unfortunately, it is taking up all the space, and that makes me very sad. It’s very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía."

"The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust," he continued. "And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are

absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It’s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable."
