Ariel Winter Recalls First Time Being Cyber Bullied
Mary Kate Cornett's family is taking legal action.
After online rumors accused the University of Mississippi student of inappropriate behavior with her boyfriend's family that she said were "categorically false," her family has filed a police report with the Oxford Police Department and the university campus police, authorities told multiple outlets.
"My daughter, Mary Kate Cornett, has been the subject of a totally and categorically false, malicious, organized and defamatory cyber attack," her dad Justin Cornett shared in a Feb. 27 Facebook post. "I refuse to let my family be targeted and am fully committed to pursuing all criminal and civil actions available. To those responsible, we will find you."
Justin alleged that the 18-year-old had been "publicly doxed" and that their family had been "forced to take protective measures to ensure her safety."
Mary Kate said in her statement included in Justin's Facebook post that "partially and wholly edited screenshots, fake AI-generated videos and manipulated photographs" were used to spread the rumors.
"The viral nature of these wholly untrue allegations have forced me to
retain legal counsel forensic data investigators," she shared, "and seek alternative education/living arrangements while we find those responsible for these utterly false accusations."
Mary Kate went on to note that the rumors have taken a toll on her and her loved ones.
"The pain and heartbreak is immense," the Kappa Delta Sorority member continued. "These lies have affected my family, my friends, my social organizations and school administrators. Ultimately, I have confidence we will get through this and ask for any and all support while our family and others affected slowly heal."
