Gilmore Girls’ Lauren Graham Reveals Where Lorelai and Luke Currently Stand
Lauren Graham is ready to smell snow again in Stars Hollow.
The actress—who played Lorelai on Gilmore Girls from 2000 to 2007—revealed her idea for a second revival of the TV series following Netflix’s 2016 A Year in the Life. And Lauren thinks a movie might be more feasible than a TV show.
"Given everyone's lives and schedules, it's a Christmas movie," she said on the March 9 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast. "It's not me trying to get out of the question. It is literally what I could picture."
As Lauren explained, "I think [what] the Brits do so well with their beloved shows is that you get a Christmas special. It's not episodes, but it's seeing all your friends together again. It's one of the reasons I thought the Walmart commercial was a sweet, where-are-they-now kind of thing."
Indeed, the Parenthood alum reunited with former on-screen love interest Scott Patterson, who played diner owner Luke Danes, in December for a holiday-themed commercial for the store.
And if a Christmas special does happen next, she believes "it just can't be the same.”
"Now, Lorelai and Luke got married," she said. "Now, Rory's maybe having a baby, so it's not going to be necessarily the two of us circling the gazebo."
However, this wouldn't be the first Gilmore Girls revival. In 2016, Netflix released the four-part Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life nine years after the original series' finale. Lauren explained that while she loved the experience and working again with the show's creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, she is aware that fans didn't necessarily feel content.
"There seems to have been a mixed reaction in terms of feeling satisfied that people got what they wanted," she shared. "For me, it was an incredibly satisfying, beautiful, cried-everyday experience. I could mark some growth that I felt I had in terms of that character, that time working with Amy. It felt different. All the stuff that I loved about it was the same, and then it was better and different in the more grown-up version."

And Lauren emphasized the importance of satisfying the loyal fans, asking, "How do you honor those people who have kept it alive? Is it giving them more? Is it doing what Reese Witherspoon's doing with Legally Blonde's Elle, the prequel? Is this a Captain Marvel multiverse where you want to follow whoever? Or do you try to go back?"
Ultimately, Lauren isn't sure if another revival is the right move, even if fans
want it to be. But, if someone comes knocking, the Talking as Fast as I Can author is ready to make her return.
"I do still get asked, is it literally just better to leave them wanting more? I don't know," Lauren added. "Thank God it isn't up to me. And what I have clearly said, is if somebody calls me to do it, I'll do it."
