Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires Finalize Divorce

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires have finalized their divorce, officially ending their marriage after nearly 11 years together.

Earlier this month, Isbell — who initiated the divorce in December 2023 — ruminated on new romance and a former marriage on his new album Foxes in the Snow. On one song, “True Believer,” he sings: “All your girlfriends say I broke your fucking heart/and I don’t like it.”

Shortly after filing, Isbell suggested that it would be a little while before details of the dissolution of their relationship would make its way into his music. “I’m gonna be patient and in the meantime I got plenty of other shit to write about. That’s one thing I think of a lot of songwriters miss is the inspiration,” he said in February 2024. “You don’t need it, man. You don’t need it, it’s everywhere. If you can’t look

out your window and find 20 things to write about then you’re not a serious songwriter yet. Because it’s all over the place.”

With the divorce finalized and Isbell moved on to a new relationship, the musicians are still raising their 9-year-old daughter together. “If anybody here is, like, a single mom, that shit’s fucking hard,” Shires said in May 2024 while opening for Isbell and the 400 Unit in Denver. “Also, being a single dad, that’s probably hard too. Whatever. Here comes the fun!” Isbell praised the set later on, saying: “I’ve seen a lot of Amanda Shires sets, but that was one of my very favorites. It was a real honor and a real pleasure to have her and her fantastic band out here.”

In a recent interview with WSJ Magazine, Isbell clarifies that their marriage didn’t end because of any infidelity. He noted that Shires “didn’t cheat, I didn’t cheat” and that “we weren’t plate-throwers, and we weren’t yelling in front of the kid.” According to the article, their union ended because of tension in their work and married life.
