Gene Hackman's Daughter Elizabeth Jean Hackman Speaks Out After Death of Actor, Wife and Dog
Gene Hackman’s family is not jumping to any conclusions.
After the 95-year-old and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead alongside one of their dogs in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Feb. 26, his nephew Tim Hackman emphasized that the family is waiting for a full investigation to determine the cause of their deaths.
“We’re waiting on toxicology,” Tim, the son of Gene’s brother Richard Hackman, told Us Weekly in an interview published March 3. “That will tell us everything. It’s hard to theorize. There are lots of theories out there and I don’t want to speculate. It’s easy to speculate negative theories.”
For now, amid all the questions surrounding the death of the Oscar winner and his wife, the family is remaining optimistic. As Tim put it, “The family wants to keep it positive for now and when we know the truth we will deal with it.”
Just two days after Gene and Betsy—who were married since 1991—were discovered dead in separate rooms in their homes, the police gave insight into the suspected timeline of their deaths. During a Feb. 28 press conference, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza, said authorities suspect Gene died around Feb. 17 based on the last recorded “event” on his pacemaker.

However, according to the sheriff, determining the timeline of their deaths is a challenge.
“There was no indication that anybody was moving about the house or doing anything different,” the sheriff said on Today Feb. 28. “So it's very hard to determine if they both passed at the time or how close they passed together.”
While the family and authorities try to piece together the tragic events, Gene’s legacy in Hollywood has been celebrated by his friends and fans. During the 97th annual Academy Awards, Morgan Freeman reflected on how the Welcome to Mooseport actor wanted to be remembered.
“Gene always said, ‘I don't think about legacy. I just hope people remember me as someone who tried to do good work,’” the actor—who costarred in the films Unforgiven and Under Suspicion with Gene—said during the March 2 ceremony. “So I think I speak for us all when I say, Gene, you will be remembered for that and for so much more. Rest in peace, my friend.”
